Queensland requires a separate PWC endorsement to ride a jet ski. Already hold your boat licence? We run dedicated PWC endorsement sessions.

Getting licensed is a simple three-step process

The Process

Three steps to your licence

Complete your online theory training

Before your practical day, you need to complete your online BoatSafe theory training. When you book we'll send you the link and everything you need. It takes a couple of hours and can be done from home at your own pace.

Cost: $50

Book and attend your practical session

Choose your licence type, pick a date, and book online. On the day, you'll complete practical training and assessment on the water, then your theory assessment at the ramp. We take as long as needed to build your confidence before you're assessed.

Cost: $250 (boat licence)

Apply for your licence with Transport and Main Roads

Once you pass, you receive a Statement of Competency. Present it at any Transport and Main Roads office and pay the government application fee to have your licence issued. The fee is not part of your course cost. See the TMR website for current charges.

About Boat Pilot

Boat Pilot is owned and operated by Brendon van Ras, a lifelong boatie who has held a commercial marine coxswain licence for 15 years and brings a career in maritime sustainment, professional training, and business operations to every session on the water.

A lifetime on the water gave him a clear view of how recreational boat training should be done. He started Boat Pilot to do it properly: compliance-first, unhurried, and genuinely focused on building skill and confidence.

Common Questions

Before you book

We want you to turn up prepared, not confused. These are the questions we hear most often.

What age can I get a boat licence in Queensland?

You need to be at least 16 years old to hold an RMDL (boat) or PWC (jet ski) licence. The course is available from age 15 years and 6 months.

Can I ride a jet ski (PWC) on my boat licence?

No. In Queensland, a personal watercraft (jet ski) requires its own licence (a PWC endorsement). You must also hold a Recreational Marine Driver’s Licence (RMDL) first. That is why most students do both in one day.

Do I need to do anything before my session with you?

Yes, you need to complete the online training course prior to your practical training and assessment day. It takes a couple of hours and can be done from home at your own pace.

How long does the practical day take?

A boat licence day runs approximately five hours. A combined boat and jet ski day runs from approximately 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. These time can be less if not a full group.

What happens if I don't pass?

Your first re-sit with Boat Pilot is free, no charge, subject to availability. We’ll let you know specifically what to work on, and book you back in as soon as we have a suitable session. We want you to get your licence.

Can I book for just myself, or do I need to fill a group?

You can book as a solo student. Most providers require a minimum of two, we take single bookings. You’ll still have a thorough session; it’ll just be quicker overall.
