Jet Ski Licence Redland Bay
The Licence
What is a PWC (Personal Watercraft) licence?
In Queensland, a Personal Watercraft (PWC) licence is a separate endorsement that allows you to operate a jet ski or other personal watercraft. It cannot be obtained standalone – you must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a Recreational Marine Driver’s Licence (RMDL, boat licence) at the same time.
If you already have a boat licence, adding the PWC endorsement is a relatively short and straightforward process. If you don’t have a boat licence yet, see our combined boat and jet ski licence page – doing both on the same day is the most efficient option.
No boat licence yet?
Getting both licences on the same day is the most time-efficient option: one day, one booking, lower total cost. See our combined boat and jet ski licence page for full details.
On the Day
How your jet ski licence session runs
Before you attend: complete your online theory training
Theory assessment
You sit a theory assessment covering jet ski-specific rules, safety, and maritime regulations. If you're doing the jet ski licence only (you already hold a boat licence), this is a standalone theory assessment. If you're doing the combined session, both theory assessments are completed on the same day.
One-on-one practical training
Jet ski training is one student at a time. The instructor covers all MSQ-required manoeuvres: safely approaching a floating object, person overboard drill, avoiding an obstacle, port and starboard turns, figure of eight manoeuvre, approaching and departing a pontoon, general navigation and control of the jet ski, and operating at six knots. You get dedicated time on the ski with the instructor's full attention.
Practical assessment
Once you're ready, the instructor assesses each manoeuvre formally. Same approach as the boat - we won't put you through the assessment until we're confident you're prepared.
Statement of Competency issued
Your PWC endorsement is added to your Statement of Competency alongside the RMDL. Take both to Transport and Main Roads for your licence to be issued.
Note for jet ski-only bookings
If you’re booking the jet ski-only session (you already have your boat licence), we’ll confirm your exact start time by phone after booking. Jet ski sessions run after any boat licence sessions scheduled that day, so timing varies. We’ll call you the day before with a confirmed time.
