Your Boat & Jet Ski Licence, right here in Redland Bay

This is home water. We train at the Moores Road ramp on Weinam Creek, on the calm, protected water of southern Moreton Bay, so you learn to read the tides, channels and go-slow zones on the exact water you will actually boat on. A familiar local ramp, a modern easy-to-drive boat, and an instructor who takes it at your pace.

Getting licensed on your home water

Redland Bay is boating country

Few places in South East Queensland put you closer to the water. Redland Bay sits at the doorstep of southern Moreton Bay, with the islands, the passages and some of the best crabbing and fishing in the state a short run from the ramp.

That is exactly why it is the right place to learn. When you train with Boat Pilot you are not practising on a flat, lifeless dam and then being thrown into real conditions later. You learn on genuine, protected tidal water at Weinam Creek, reading the current, the channel markers and the other traffic you will share the bay with every weekend.

Boat Pilot is a BoatSafe-accredited provider based in Redland Bay, owned and run by Brendon. You deal with the person who trains you, from the first phone call to the day you pass. Small groups, no rushing, and a free re-sit if you need it.

Whether you have just moved to the Redlands, bought your first tinny, or finally decided this is the summer the family gets licensed, this page covers where you will train, where you can boat once you hold your licence, and exactly what it costs.

Where Toowoomba boats

The water on your doorstep, and how to use it

A local guide to the water around Redland Bay, so you know what is out there and what to watch for. Rules and zones change, so always check current signage, tides and the marine park maps before you launch.

Weinam Creek & the ramp

The heart of boating in Redland Bay. A council-maintained ramp with good parking, the Southern Moreton Bay Islands ferry terminal and the marina alongside. Sheltered, easy to launch, and the calm water just off the ramp is ideal for learning and for your assessment.

Southern Moreton Bay

Protected by the bay islands and North Stradbroke, this is some of the calmest, most forgiving water in South East Queensland. Crabbing, flathead and whiting, a cruise with the family, or a learner building confidence, it all happens here. Keep an eye on the tide, the flats dry out fast.

The Bay Islands

The Southern Moreton Bay Islands sit minutes across the Canaipa Passage. A favourite for a day trip, a pub lunch or dropping the pots, and an easy first destination once your licence is sorted.

Moreton Bay Marine Park

The whole bay is a marine park. That means go-slow areas that protect turtles and dugong, and green (no-take) zones where you cannot fish. Getting these wrong is an easy and expensive mistake, so we point out the ones closest to you during your session.

Coochiemudlo & Victoria Point

A short cruise north brings you to Coochiemudlo Island off Victoria Point, with its beaches and calm anchorages. Perfect for a first solo trip once your licence is sorted. Victoria Point itself has another ramp if you are launching from that end of the Redlands.

Jumpinpin & the open bay

Down south, the Jumpinpin bar between the Stradbroke islands opens to offshore water. It is some of the best fishing around, but the bar and the swell demand real skill and local knowledge. Get your licence and your hours up on the calm water first, then work towards it.

Where We Train

Right at the Weinam Creek ramp

Your practical day runs from the Moores Road boat ramp on Weinam Creek, the ramp most Redland Bay locals already know. It is council-maintained, well-signed and easy to reach off Boundary Road, with straightforward trailer parking and the calm water of the creek and bay right there for training and assessment.

Because it is sheltered, conditions are consistent and forgiving, which is exactly what you want when you are learning to berth, anchor and run the mandatory manoeuvres. No long tow, no rough crossing, no surprises on assessment day.

We send you everything before the day

Precise directions to the ramp, where to park, what to bring and how to prepare. You will know exactly where to be and what to expect.
Why Redland Bay locals choose us

A local provider that does it properly

You have options for getting licensed around the Redlands. Here is what sets Boat Pilot apart.

Genuinely local

Based in Redland Bay and training on Weinam Creek. We know this water, these tides and these ramps because we are out here every week, same as you.

Owner-operator, every session

Brendon runs every course himself. You will not be handed to a casual subcontractor or chase an answering service. Call and you speak to the person training you.

Fully BoatSafe compliant

Accredited under the BoatSafe scheme and recognised by Maritime Safety Queensland. Correct class sizes, every mandatory manoeuvre, no corners cut. Your licence is sound.

Blue Card holder

Cleared to work with children, so teenagers and younger students are in safe, checked hands. A lot of our bookings are families getting licensed together.

Small groups, real helm time

Capped at four students per session, and we take single bookings. You get proper time at the wheel, not a few rushed minutes at the back of a crowd.

Free re-sit guarantee

If you do not pass first time, your first re-sit is on us, subject to availability. No second invoice. Most students pass on the day anyway.

Toowoomba boat licence FAQs

Frequently asked

Straight answers to the things Darling Downs boaties want to know before they book. Still stuck? Give us a call, we would rather answer a question than have you turn up unsure.

Where exactly do you train in Redland Bay?

We train at the Moores Road boat ramp on Weinam Creek, right in Redland Bay. It is a council-maintained ramp with good parking and easy access, and it opens straight onto the calm, protected water of southern Moreton Bay. We send precise directions and a preparation guide when you book.

Can I boat out to the Bay Islands once I am licensed?

Yes. Once you hold your RMDL you can run across to Russell, Macleay, Lamb and Karragarra islands, out through the Canaipa Passage and around southern Moreton Bay. We teach you to read the tides, channels and go-slow zones you will use on exactly this water. For more, see our guide to boating the Bay Islands.

How much does a boat licence cost in Redland Bay?

A boat licence is $300 for your training and assessment, and the combined boat and jet ski course is $475 for both together, which saves you $90 versus booking them separately. A separate government fee is paid to Transport and Main Roads when you collect your licence. See our full cost breakdown.

Do I need to know the Moreton Bay Marine Park zones?

Yes, and we cover it. Southern Moreton Bay has go-slow areas that protect turtles and dugong, and green (no-take) zones where you cannot fish. Knowing where they are keeps you safe, legal and off a fine. We point out the ones closest to Redland Bay during your session.

How far is the ramp from Victoria Point, Cleveland or Thornlands?

The Weinam Creek ramp is about 10 minutes from Victoria Point and Thornlands, and around 15 to 20 minutes from Cleveland, Capalaba and Mount Cotton. Most Redlands locals are at the ramp inside 20 minutes. We also run dedicated pages for Victoria Point, Cleveland, Thornlands, Capalaba and Logan.

Can I get both my boat and jet ski licence in one day?

Yes. The combined course covers both the RMDL boat licence and the PWC jet ski endorsement in a single session, typically 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. It is the most popular choice for Redland Bay locals because it sorts both licences in one day and costs less than booking each course separately.

What is the minimum age for a boat or jet ski licence in Queensland?

You must be 16 to hold either the RMDL or the PWC endorsement. You can sit the course from 15 years and 6 months, so you are ready to apply the day you turn 16. More in our age requirements guide.

What happens if I do not pass on the day?

Your first re-sit with Boat Pilot is free, subject to availability. We will be clear about what to practise and rebook you as soon as we can. Most students pass on the day, but the guarantee is there if you need it.
