Your Boat & Jet Ski Licence for Toowoomba

Up the range, the local dams are made for quiet fishing, not skiing. So when Toowoomba boaties want to really open up, they head for Somerset or down to the coast. Boat Pilot gets you licensed on the calm, protected saltwater of Redland Bay, the real conditions you will actually ride.

Getting licensed when you live up the range

Toowoomba boating is a tale of two waters

There is the quiet water at the top of the range, and the fast water everyone drives to. Knowing the difference is the first step to getting the right licence.
Toowoomba sits high on the Great Dividing Range, and its three water supply lakes reflect that. Cressbrook, Cooby and Perseverance are peaceful, protected and tightly managed. They are brilliant for a quiet morning chasing bass or paddling a kayak, but they are not where you go to tow a skier or open up a jet ski.

For that, Darling Downs families load the trailer and head east: to Lake Somerset for skiing and jet skis, or down the range to Moreton Bay and the coast for offshore fishing, crabbing and days around the bay islands. That is open, tidal, real-world water, and it is exactly what a good licence course should prepare you for.

There are places to sit a licence course in Toowoomba itself. What Boat Pilot offers is different: a genuinely compliant, small-group course on protected saltwater, run by an owner-operator who does not cut corners. Plenty of Toowoomba boaties decide that is worth the drive, especially the ones whose boat lives at the coast anyway.

Where Toowoomba boats

The local water, and what you can actually do on it

A quick, honest guide to the water around Toowoomba, so you know which licence you need and where you will really use it. Rules change, so always check the current signage and permits before you launch.

Lake Cressbrook

The Darling Downs’ go-to for real water sports. Motorised craft are welcome, with dedicated areas for water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding and tubing at spots like Kirkleagh and The Spit. You will need a boating permit, and you will need your licence. This is where your licence really earns its keep.

Lake Cooby

A quiet favourite for sailing, canoeing and rowing. Only electric motors, sailboats and paddlecraft are permitted. No petrol or combustion engines at all, so a licensed powerboat is not part of the picture here. Peaceful fishing and picnics.

Lake Perseverance

The most tightly protected of the three water supply lakes. Boating, fishing and windsurfing are not permitted here, so it is one for a bushwalk and a picnic rather than a day on the water. Worth knowing before you tow a boat out there.

Lake Somerset

The Darling Downs’ go-to for real water sports. Motorised craft are welcome, with dedicated areas for water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding and tubing at spots like Kirkleagh and The Spit. You will need a boating permit, and you will need your licence. This is where your licence really earns its keep.

The Coast & Moreton Bay

Offshore fishing, crabbing, a run to the bay islands, jet skis on protected water. This is where a lot of Darling Downs boats spend their summers. It is also where Boat Pilot trains, so you learn to read tides, wind and traffic on the exact kind of water you will be using.

Not sure which licence?

Any petrol boat over 4.5kW needs a boat licence (RMDL). A jet ski needs the boat licence plus a personal watercraft licence (PWCL). You can get both in one day. We will help you work out exactly what you need.
Why Toowoomba boaties make the trip

What you get for the drive down

There are closer options. Here is why plenty of Darling Downs boaties choose to get licensed properly, on real water, with Boat Pilot.

Real saltwater, not a flat dam

You learn on protected but genuine tidal water at Redland Bay, reading wind, current and other traffic. That is the water Toowoomba boats actually end up on at Somerset and the coast.

A free re-sit, so no second trip

The biggest worry about travelling for a course is failing and having to come back. If you do not pass first time, your first re-sit is on us, subject to availability. Most people pass on the day anyway.

Genuinely compliant training

Some operators cut corners, and a few have been suspended for it. Boat Pilot is built around meeting Maritime Safety Queensland standards properly, so your licence is sound and your skills are real.

Small groups, real helm time

We cap classes at five students and take single bookings. You get proper time driving the boat, not a couple of rushed minutes at the back of a big group.

Boat and jet ski in one day

Do the drive once. Get both your boat and jet ski licences in a single day, with one course fee and fewer theory questions than doing them separately.

Owner-operator, not a franchise

You are taught by an experienced, accredited instructor who runs the business, not a rushed casual subcontractor. Patient teaching that suits nervous first-timers and teens alike.
How it works for Toowoomba residents

From the Downs to licensed, step by step

Book your date online

Choose a course date that suits, on a weekend or a quiet weekday. Booking is quick, and we take single bookings so you are never waiting for a group to fill.

Complete the short online theory

Before the day, you complete an approved online theory course (around $20). You can knock it over at home in Toowoomba at your own pace.

Drive down the range

It is roughly two hours to Redland Bay via the Warrego Highway and the Gateway. Many people make a day of it, or come down the night before. Combine it with a coast run if your boat is already down there.

4

Do the one-day course

A 7am start on calm, protected water. Theory teaching, the theory assessment, hands-on boat time, then the practical assessment. Add the jet ski component on the same day if you want both.

5

Collect your licence in Toowoomba

You leave with a statement of competency, valid for six months. Take it to the Transport and Main Roads customer service centre in Toowoomba to have your licence issued. It is then a licence for life.

What it costs

Clear pricing, nothing hidden

A Queensland boat licence has three parts, and only one of them is paid to your training provider. Doing your boat and jet ski together is the best value if you want both, and it means only one trip down the range.
Fees can change and the government fee is set by Transport and Main Roads, so treat these as a guide and confirm the current figures when you book. Ask about our midweek discount if your schedule is flexible.

Toowoomba boat licence FAQs

Frequently asked

Straight answers to the things Darling Downs boaties want to know before they book. Still stuck? Give us a call, we would rather answer a question than have you turn up unsure.

Where can I get a boat licence in Toowoomba?

If you live in Toowoomba, you can complete your boat licence training and assessment with Boat Pilot at Redland Bay, roughly a two-hour drive away. We don’t run courses in Toowoomba—all practical training takes place on the protected waters of Redland Bay. After passing, you can take your statement of competency to a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre in Toowoomba to apply for your licence.

How far is Redland Bay from Toowoomba?

Around 150 km, or roughly one hour 45 minutes to two hours by road via the Warrego Highway and the Gateway Motorway, depending on traffic and where in Toowoomba you start. Courses begin at 7am, so some students drive down the evening before.

Do I need a boat licence to use the Toowoomba dams?

It depends on the dam and the boat. On Lake Cressbrook, a petrol outboard over 4.5kW requires a boat licence, though speeds are limited. Lake Cooby only allows electric motors and non-powered craft, so a licensed powerboat does not come into it. Lake Perseverance does not permit boating at all. If in doubt, check the current signage before you launch.

Can you water ski or jet ski on the Toowoomba dams?

Not really. Lake Cressbrook has speed limits and restricts general water skiing to club and organised use, and Lake Cooby is electric only. For skiing, wakeboarding and jet skis, Darling Downs boaties head to Lake Somerset, or down the range to Moreton Bay and the coast.

Where do Toowoomba people go to ride jet skis and water ski?

Lake Somerset is the closest proper destination, about an hour and 15 minutes east via Esk, with dedicated water ski and jet ski areas at spots like Kirkleagh and The Spit. You will need a boating permit and your licence. Beyond that, the coast at Moreton Bay is where a lot of local boats spend the summer.

Can I do my boat and jet ski licence on the same day?

Yes. The combined course covers both in a single day, with one course fee and fewer theory questions than doing them separately. For anyone travelling from Toowoomba, it also means only one trip down the range.

How much does a boat licence cost?

As a guide, around $400 all up for a boat licence. That includes the online theory (about $20), the practical training and assessment (about $280 with Boat Pilot), and the Transport and Main Roads licence fee (about $100). The combined boat and jet ski course costs a bit more. Confirm current figures when you book.

What happens if I fail? Do I have to drive down again?

Your first re-sit is free, subject to availability, so a nervous day does not turn into a second course fee. It is also worth knowing the course is competency based: you are taught and given practice before being assessed, so most people pass on the day.

Where do I actually get the licence issued near Toowoomba?

After you pass, you take your statement of competency to a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre. There is one in Toowoomba, so you do not need to return to the coast to finalise it. Do this within six months while the statement is valid.

Why learn at the coast instead of somewhere closer?

Because a licence should teach you to handle the water you will really use. Learning on tidal saltwater at Redland Bay prepares you for Somerset and the coast far better than a flat, speed-limited dam. Add small groups, genuine compliance and a free re-sit, and a lot of Toowoomba boaties decide the drive is worth it.
